Engineering Programming Guide

What to expect from your first programming course, and the concepts worth knowing beforehand.

Most German engineering programs include at least one programming course in the first year, even outside computer science. It's rarely the hardest course on paper, but it's often the first time students have to think in a completely different, more literal way than they're used to.

Which Language You'll Use

The exact language depends on the university and the specific program: C and C++ remain common in mechanical and electrical engineering, Python shows up frequently as a first language for its readability, and Java appears in some computer-science-adjacent tracks. The underlying logic matters more than the syntax of any one language, since that logic transfers directly once you know it.

Concepts Worth Understanding Before You Write Your First Program

  • Variables and data types: how a program stores and labels the information it works with.
  • Conditionals (if/else logic): how a program makes decisions based on changing values.
  • Loops: how repeated tasks are automated instead of written out by hand, line by line.
  • Functions: how larger problems get broken into smaller, reusable pieces instead of one long block of code.

Why the First Few Weeks Feel Disproportionately Hard

Programming is unforgiving about precision in a way most other first-semester subjects aren't: a single missing bracket or misplaced semicolon can stop a program from running at all, with no partial credit for being nearly right. That strictness is normal, not a sign you're not cut out for it, and it gets noticeably easier once you've debugged your first handful of small, frustrating errors.

A Practical Way to Prepare

Pick one beginner-friendly language, Python is a reasonable default, and write small, boring programs: converting units, sorting a short list, calculating something you'd otherwise do by hand. The specific exercises matter less than building the habit of reading error messages carefully instead of guessing at fixes.

GSA Engineering Prep™ includes a dedicated introduction to programming module, built to get you comfortable with this way of thinking before it's combined with new technical content in your first semester.
