Engineering Methods Guide
How German engineering courses expect you to document and present your work, not just solve it.
A correct answer presented the wrong way can still cost you points in a German engineering course. Technical working methods, how you document, structure and present your work, are taught far less explicitly than the subject matter itself, which is exactly why they catch so many international students off guard.
Übungen: Not Optional, Not Graded the Way You'd Expect
Übungen (problem sets or tutorial sessions) usually aren't graded directly, but skipping them is one of the most common reasons students struggle later: they're where exam-style reasoning gets practiced, not just the lecture's theory. Professors design exams assuming you've done the Übungen seriously, not just attended the lectures.
What a Lab Report Is Expected to Contain
- A clear statement of the objective: what the experiment or exercise was meant to show, stated before any results.
- Method and setup: described precisely enough that someone else could repeat it from your description alone.
- Results presented cleanly: tables and labeled graphs, not raw numbers pasted without context.
- A discussion of error and uncertainty: German engineering culture takes measurement error seriously, and ignoring it reads as a gap in rigor, not a shortcut.
Why Documentation Style Feels Like a Hidden Curriculum
Many international students arrive with strong technical skills but little practice in the specific documentation conventions German universities expect, since these norms vary significantly between countries and are rarely taught as their own subject. The result is work that's technically correct but loses points on presentation, which feels unfair until you understand it's a skill like any other, and one you can prepare for in advance.
A Practical Way to Prepare
Find one or two example lab reports or Übung solutions, from a professor's course page, a senior student, or GSA's own materials, and study their structure before you ever need to write your own. Copying the format of a strong example is a faster way to learn the convention than guessing at it under deadline pressure.
GSA Engineering Prep™ dedicates a module to exactly these technical working methods, so the format of your work doesn't cost you points that your understanding earned.
