Engineering Exams Guide

What a German engineering Klausur looks like, and where students lose points unnecessarily.

Most German engineering programs put almost all the weight of a course on a single exam at the end of the semester, not on a series of smaller assessments along the way. Understanding what that exam looks like matters as much as knowing the material it covers.

The Klausur Format You're Preparing For

A Klausur (written exam) is typically two to three hours, closed-book or with a tightly defined formula sheet, and weighted heavily toward multi-step problems rather than short factual questions. Partial credit for correct method is common, which means showing your working matters even when the final number is wrong.

Where Students Lose Points That Have Nothing to Do With Knowing the Material

  • Skipping units: a numerically correct answer without the right unit is frequently marked as incomplete, not just sloppy.
  • No intermediate steps shown: graders generally can't award partial credit for work they can't see, even if your final answer is right.
  • Misreading what's being asked: German exam questions are often precisely worded, and skimming costs more than it seems to save.
  • Running out of time on one question: a strong answer to half the exam beats a rushed, incomplete answer to all of it.

What Plausibility Checks Catch

Experienced students develop a habit of sanity-checking their own answers before moving on: does this force make sense for an object this size, does this current seem reasonable for this circuit. It's a two-minute habit that regularly catches a sign error or a misplaced decimal before it costs an entire problem's worth of points.

A Practical Way to Prepare

Work through past exams (Altklausuren) under real time pressure, not just the lecture's practice problems, since the exam's phrasing and pacing are usually different from what you've seen in Übungen. Most professors make at least one or two past papers available, and they're a far better predictor of the real exam than the textbook alone.

GSA Engineering Prep™ builds exam-style practice into its final module, so your first real Klausur experience isn't your first semester's biggest exam.
