Studying While Working: Is It Worth It?

Somewhere around the two or three year mark in a career, a familiar question shows up: would a part-time Master's, an executive certificate, or a professional qualification move things forward, or is it just another credential that looks good on paper and costs a year of weekends?

The Real Cost Isn't the Tuition

Tuition is the visible number, but it's rarely the limiting one. The real cost is two or three years of evenings and weekends that could have gone toward rest, relationships, or simply having the mental space to perform well at the job that's paying the bills. Any honest evaluation has to weigh that cost directly, not treat it as a given because "further education is always worth it."

When Employers Help

Some German employers co-fund further education tied to the role, and most German states offer Bildungsurlaub, paid educational leave employees can use for approved courses, separate from regular vacation days. Neither is automatic. Both usually require asking directly and making the case for how the specific program connects to the job, rather than assuming HR will bring it up first.

The Question That Matters

The test isn't whether a program sounds impressive. It's whether it closes a specific gap between where you are and where your career path is supposed to go next, the kind of gap you can name precisely: a technical skill the next role requires, a credential that's a hard requirement rather than a nice-to-have, a shift into a field where your current degree doesn't carry weight. A program chosen because it closes one of those gaps earns its cost. A program chosen because it feels like the responsible thing to do, without a specific gap attached, usually doesn't.

Worth It Isn't a Yes-or-No Answer

The honest answer is rarely a simple yes or a simple no; it depends on what the program is meant to fix, and whether there's a faster, cheaper way to fix the same thing. Sometimes that faster way exists: a certification instead of a full degree, mentoring instead of a classroom, a lateral move instead of new credentials altogether.

Is it worth it, then? Only against a clear, personalised career path, not against a vague sense that more education can't hurt. That's the kind of question GSA Elite™ works through with its mentees over the long term.

Your future deserves more than guesswork.
