Health Insurance for International Students: A Clear Guide

Health insurance is mandatory in Germany, and it's one of the documents required before you can enrol at university — not an optional extra to arrange once classes have started.

Public vs. Private: What You Need to Know

Germany has two parallel insurance systems: public (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) and private (private Krankenversicherung). For the large majority of international students, public insurance is both the required and the more practical choice.

Who Must Use Public Insurance

Most students under 30 at the start of their studies are required to use public health insurance, which offers broad, standardized coverage at a fixed, income-independent student rate. Some exceptions apply — for older students, or those in specific visa categories — so this is worth confirming with your university's international office before assuming either option.

What's Actually Covered

  • Doctor visits, specialist referrals and most prescription medication, typically with a small co-payment.
  • Hospital stays and emergency care.
  • Dental care, though often at a more limited level than other treatment — check your specific provider's terms.

Choosing Between Public Providers

Coverage is broadly similar across public providers (statutory law sets the minimum benefits), but service quality genuinely differs — English-language support, how quickly they issue enrolment confirmations, and how easy it is to reach someone by phone or app all vary. It's worth comparing two or three before committing, rather than defaulting to whichever office happens to be closest to your university.

Common Documentation Mistakes

  • Waiting to sort insurance until after arrival, when it's often required for enrolment itself.
  • Losing track of the enrolment confirmation — both the university and the Anmeldung process will ask for it more than once, so keep a digital and physical copy together.
  • Not informing the insurer of a change of address, which can delay correspondence about coverage.

Insurance, alongside banking and Anmeldung, is one of the core modules inside GSA Bridge™, sequenced to match what's actually required in your first weeks rather than presented as a flat checklist.

Your future deserves more than guesswork.
