The Blocked Account, Explained Simply

A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is one of the most common sources of confusion for future students — not because it's complicated, but because almost no one explains it clearly the first time.

What a Sperrkonto Actually Is

It's a special type of German bank account used to prove you can financially support yourself during your studies. Rather than simply showing a bank balance, which can be emptied the day after a visa is approved, the blocked account structurally limits how much you can withdraw each month — which is exactly why immigration authorities accept it as proof of sustained financial support.

How Much Money You Need

The German government sets an official minimum annual amount that's reviewed periodically, so always confirm the current figure directly with the German embassy or consulate handling your application rather than relying on an older source — including this one. What matters conceptually is that the total deposited covers roughly a year of the officially recognized cost of living.

How the Monthly Release Works

You deposit the full required amount before your visa application. Once you arrive and the account is activated, the bank releases a fixed monthly sum to you automatically — rather than releasing the whole balance at once. This is the mechanism that makes the account "blocked": you have guaranteed access to a monthly amount, not unrestricted access to the total.

Choosing a Provider

  • Several providers now offer fully digital blocked accounts that can be opened remotely, from your home country, before you travel.
  • Compare setup fees, monthly account fees and — importantly — how quickly each provider issues the confirmation document your visa appointment requires.
  • Read the fine print on how withdrawals work once you're in Germany; processes differ meaningfully between providers.

Common Mistakes When Opening One

  • Opening the account too late, after underestimating how long provider verification and document processing can take.
  • Depositing funds without first confirming the exact currently-required amount.
  • Assuming the blocked account replaces the need for a regular bank account after arrival — it doesn't; you'll typically open a standard account too, once you're settled.

Budget planning, including the blocked account, is covered as part of GSA Launch™, sequenced against your actual visa appointment rather than treated as an isolated task.

Your future deserves more than guesswork.
